Natalie Aviles awarded President’s Dissertation Fellowship

Grad student Natalie Aviles  has been awarded a President’s Dissertation Fellowship for 2015-2016. The competition for these fellowships is very steep, and we are pleased that Natalie has been recognized by the university. This year there were 33 nominations at the university level.

UCSD Distinguished Teaching Award given to Kelly Nielsen

Kelly Nielsen has won the university’s highest award for teaching, the  UCSD Distinguished Teaching Award for Graduate Students. We are very fortunate to have many exceptional graduate student teachers in our department, and Kelly’s award reflects well not only on him but on Sociology as a whole.

Ian Mullins receives OSD Teaching Award

Our grad student Ian Mullins has received an award of recognition acknowledging his service in providing accommodations to students with disabilities at UC San Diego.  Ian was nominated for this award by students, and he has been commended by the Office for Students with Disabilities for his continued hard work and dedication in meeting the needs of all students with disabilities.  Bravo Ian!

Prof. Kevin Lewis receives ASA award

Prof. Kevin Lewis along with Andreas Wimmer, won the Outstanding Article Award from the Mathematical Sociology Section for the article, “Beyond and Below Racial Homophily: ERG Models of a Friendship Network Documented on Facebook (AJS 2010); and along with Marco Gonzalez and Jason Kaufman, Kevin won an Honorable Mention for the Paper Award from the Communication and Information Technologies Section for the article, “Social Selection and Peer Influence in an Online Social Network” (PNAS 2012).
