In tomorrow’s lecture we will be discussing Jill Lane’s article “Digital Zapatistas.” For some context, you may want to read up on the Zapatista Movement in southern Mexico. Lane does a great job of explaining the Electronic Disturbance Theater and Electronic Civil Disobiedience, but you may want to look into the background of these movements.
As you read Lane’s article think about the definition of civil disobedience. What counts as civil disobedience in the virtual (public) sphere? How are FloodNet’s operations different than the embodied sit-in? What is “Mayan Technology”?
