Thurs. June 7: “LINDA LINDA LINDA”

June 5th, 2007 by jgloomis

Join the SFL this Thursday for another recent release from the Land of the Rising Sun (film II of the series Big in Japan). “Linda Linda Linda” (Wikipedia, IMDB) from director Nobuhiro Yamashita (IMDB) is the story of a group of high school friends trying to put together a band for a school festival. Two days out, the guitarist and singer flake and the remaining members have to recruit a Korean exchange student (that barely speaks Japanese) as lead singer.

With a soundtrack by James Iha of the Smashing Pumpkins and the acclaimed deadpan comic style of director Yamashita, “Linda” scores big with lovers of international cinema. Don’t miss it!

As always, expect delicious things.

Thurs. May 24: “SURVIVE STYLE 5+”

May 26th, 2007 by jgloomis

Ok, so this a retroactive announcement. Sort of like a retrospective. If this retrospective had a name, it would probably be

Surviving SURVIVE STYLE: 2 days later

Anyway, it was a blast and I thank all you attendees. This insouciant film starred Tadanobu Asano (Ichi the Killer, “Japan’s answer to Johnny Depp”) as the murderous husband and Reika Hashimoto as the vengeful bride. I was totally entranced by Hashimoto, who, it turns out, owes her stunning looks in part to a mixed Spanish-Japanese heritage. Survive Style 5+ was directed by Gen Sekiguchi, who hasn’t done any other feature-length films I can find. His style reminds me a bit of Michel Gondry, who, like Sekiguchi, established himself with shorter works like music videos.

Anyway, here’s the haunting Hashimoto about to open up a canna.

Reika Hashimoto

Oh, England, you’ve given us so much. To your boundless largess we owe the Industrial Revolution, parliamentary democracy, and Lily Allen. But what treasure of the Empire’s bounty glimmers brighter than the Fab Four? Who among Her Majesty’s subjects can hold a candle to those lovable lads from Liverpool, the Beatles? We here at SFL say “nobody!” and we’re gonna pay homage the best way we know how — with a movie!

WHAT: “A Hard Day’s Night” (1964), starring The Beatles
WHERE: AP&M 4301, aka The Multimedia Room
WHEN: Thursday, May 10, mingle @ 6:45, movie @ 7

Cheerio,

the SFL
